Reminiscent of the military-issued 5517 Submariner, we’ve made every effort to capture all the recognised characteristics of the much sought after ‘Milsub’.
Using a modern Submariner for the base of this customisation makes the watch highly wearable, robust and accurate whilst subtle nods to its past reference give it the charm and appeal of watches being produced in the 70’s.
Fit For Duty
What is now one of the rarest collectors watches was once merely Ministry of Defense standard issue equipment. The MOD knocked on Rolex’s door in the 70’s, looking for a timepiece sturdy enough to survive underwater and in the field. Originally never available for public sale, original 5517’s are now reaching hundreds of thousands in auction.
The Dial
The dial features the circled “T” that indicated the use of Tritium in the lume on the original dials. Fortunately luminous has evolved over the years and our dial artisans use Super Luminova to brilliantly recreate the aged luminous hour markers.
The Hands
Each of the 10 pieces sports a set of the instantly recognisable sword hands coupled with a recreated aged luminous. These sit above the period-style features on the dial to create a perfect fusion of the old with the new.
The Bezel
The watch comes equipped with a bespoke bezel insert produced in Italy and graduated for a full 60 minutes as appose to 15 minutes on the current reference. The 60 minute bezel found on the 5517 gave more accurate readings when being used as dive watches.
Custom Casing
We have taken the modern case from the Submariner 114060 and refinished the lugs to achieve the same uniform angled grain typical of any vintage Sub. The watch is supplied with three separate canvas NATO straps that all complement the design and add to its durability.
